Sometimes we have to remove the hype to get to the source of something and consider what makes it powerful. When we connect with an artist, it isn’t because of what the media have told us about them, how many ‘likes’ they have on Facebook or what fashion designer they are the darling of this season. The impact of talent and the connection of a voice, a poem or a song that has come from the heart, hits at a gut level and becomes a light that can transform your thoughts, your mood and your memories; a very special and unique talent.
Amy Winehouse was an artist who did not conform to the dictates of what has now become the all too familiar celebrity media storm – to be edgy (but not too much) yet staying safe and somewhat unrecognisable from the image projected. She simply lived her own life - and at a time when the music industry was transforming, that life got served up to us all as a story.
But what was real was her voice; the joy and crisis of it that resonated with so many. What has meaning still exists and that’s what is important.
